My Straw Bale Garden Experiment

Deer damage and replanting

June 26, 2007

This is what a deer will do to a pepper plant, the top and the peppers are gone.   You can see the wheat is doing well at the rear of the bale.

Replanting, with some new Jalapeños. The biggest one is a Mucho Nacho (may be Jalapeño). I also found a nice Red Cherry hot pepper plant.   I replanted the damaged plants amid some Azaleas.   The deer may get them again, but if not...

The Mucho Nacho dwarfs the new Jalapeños on either side

We're trying these baskets to keep deer from eating the tender young plants.   Each evening, we'll put them over the plants.  So far, the deer seem to be reluctant to poke their heads inside the  'tomato baskets'. We put our 'Mucho Nacho' inside one of them.

A friend suggested I try Moth Balls, to repel deer.  I'm going to try some. If you have any ideas, or know of something that works, please let me know.

I'll try to keep updating the photos, about every 3 or 4 weeks, to show the progress of my experiment.
