Would Smell As Sweet
                                                (From July 2003)

When our son Shawn was about two, he had a few of his own words. I
hear I did too. I had a little pedal tractor and wagon, I understand that
the wagon, hitch and tongue were called: a "Pringle, Ramraft and a
Prong-geese". I have no idea what each were. Dillon also used words
that were all his own. He would nod and say: "Uhgn Uhgn" which was
later modified to "Uhg-emms" -- for yes or Uh-Huh. Madison couldn't
say: "Olives", so she asked for: "Ob-dibs". Shawn's words have been
favorites to us for years, because they seemed to represent: "I love
you"..."see you later"...or even, "bye bye, I love you".... So, at times
today, just before we part, I'll say to Carol: "Dooka Dooka Pounnn".

"Dooka Dooka Pounnn"...(My spell checker is going to go crazy this
morning). "That which we call a rose by any other name would smell
as sweet." Juliet's reply to Romeo doesn't apply here. We both feel
that Shawn's words for "I love you" seem to resonate within our ears
with love itself. It almost seems as if 'normal' language wasn't quite
enough for his expression of love. He was a very loving child. Even
today if he sits beside his mom or me, we have to ask him to give us
a little room. He was a cuddler, always touching us. We often wonder
if that came from the earliest days in his life when we couldn't touch
or hold him.

He was in an incubator for almost two weeks. We weren't allowed to
even touch him for more than a week. When we finally took him home,
we tried to make up for lost time. Often, he and I would fall asleep
together in my Easy Chair. He developed colic. Then, the only way to
calm him and get him to sleep was for me to hold him, rub his back
and gently bounce him on my shoulder. Carol loved that, He always
wanted his daddy to pace the floor with him. I got very little sleep at
night for the first 9 months or so of his life.

Shawn's words: "Dooka Dooka Pounnn" were the language of love.
God's words are also the language of love. His book, our bible, is
written in love. Especially these: "For God so loved the world that he
gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should
not perish, but have everlasting life". (John 3:16 KJV). There is no
other way to say it...that would smell as sweet.... God's words are
for YOU! Shawn would have said: "Dooka Dooka Pounnn".

Father, we offer our meager thanks for Your sweet words of love. There
are no other words that smell as sweet as Yours. You've given us the
way to salvation and forgiveness of all those sins we've committed
against you. No other words could describe Your love for us. We ask
that forgiveness, as we forgive all others. As we pray together, we offer
our concerns and our loved ones to Your Throne of grace.   With all
confidence in the power of Jesus' name we pray....                          Amen.

For God so loved the world that he gave his only begotten Son, that
whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting  life.
                                                                                      John 3:16 KJV
